Anett and Fred have been married for seven- teen years, and their life has become quite predictable. Anett, returning from a business trip to Paris, unexpectedly brings home Manfred, a man she has met on the plane. She claims that this is a way of injecting new excitement into their marriage – she is in love and she wishes to share it with Fred. She doesn’t want Manfred to replace her husband, but to live side by side with him. It’s good for Fred to have some competition, she finds.
Coaxed, persuaded and overpowered by Anett, Fred allows the stranger to enter their house. Indeed, it’s difficult to understand why Anett has fallen so madly in love with Manfred, the strange, self-centred and child- like character, who earns a living acting as a guinea pig in drug trials, and whose reason for going to Paris was to sell one of his kidneys.
The intrigue is intensified by their neighbour, Anna, who has been secretly in love with Fred for years. She keeps finding reasons to drop by, and we learn that it’s pretty much an everyday routine. Seeing the situation as an opportunity for her, Anna confesses her love for Fred to Anett, pleading that she let her have him. Anett refuses and tells Anna never to come back again. It’s quite clear that it was Anna’s constant presence in their home that drove Annette to the stunt with Manfred.
However, the bedtime approaches. Anett decides to spend the first night with Manfred, but to her great surprise, Manfred refuses. So does Fred. As Anett disappears into the bedroom alone, Fred and Manfred prepare to spend the night in the living room. Anna enters, making one last attempt to seduce Fred. Instead, she ends up leaving the flat with Manfred. Anett and Fred are back in their normal, “boring”, everyday life, but now even closer than before.
