In the beginning of March 2025, the children's novel Oskar and the Things by the Estonian author Andrus Kivirähk was brought on stage in Poland. Dramatized by Anna Andraka and directed by Robert Drobniuch, the premiere took place at the Teatr Lalek Pleciuga in Szczecin.
The novel Oskar and the Things (2015), which has also been staged twice in Estonia, tells a story about a young boy sent to the countryside for the summer to live with his grandma. A dreary prospect turns into a disaster when Oskar realises he left his mobile phone back at home. Lonely and bored, Oskar crafts a phone out of a block of wood he finds in the shed and uses it to pretend to call things.
The author Andrus Kivirähk (1970) is one of the best known contemporary Estonian writers in both prose and drama. Kivirähk has also written numerous screenplays, children's books and audio plays. He is known for his imaginative stories as well as deep cultural and historical imagery, often intertwined with Estonian folklore.
