Andrus Kivirähk is one of the most renowned contemporary Estonian authors, celebrated both as a novelist and a playwright. Kivirähk’s witty wordplay, sharp satire, and delightfully self-ironic tone have earned him a broad readership. His works frequently draw on Estonian mythology, history, and politics, combining vernacular language with absurd humour and surreal situations. He often brings together the fantastical and the mundane, revealing the tragicomic core of everyday life. On stage, Kivirähk is known as the “grand young man” of Estonian drama. His theatrical works often explore themes of national identity and cultural memory with a sense of friendly irony.
