From October 16th to 18th, 2025, an Estonian-Slovenian translation workshop was held in Slovenia as part of the DoSEL –Drama of Smaller European Languages project, with Piret Jaaks, Justin Petrone, Liis Aedmaa, and Liisi Aibel representing Estonia.
The workshop focused on two plays: Piret Jaaks’s Can Animals Count? and Maša Pelko’s Für Ofelija. Jaaks’ play was translated from Estonian into Slovenian (translator Julija Potrč Šavli) and English (translator Justin Petrone), and Pelko’s play from Slovenian into English (translator Barbara Skubic) and from English into Estonian (translator Liis Aedmaa).
In addition, Estonians and Slovenians participated together in an intensive drama translation training course organized by the British theatre company Foreign Affairs. A video conference was also held with project partners from Sala Beckett in Catalonia, where a similar translation workshop in Catalan and Maltese was taking place at same the time. On the last evening, all participants had the wonderful opportunity to see a guest performance of Milo Rau’s production Medea’s Children (NTGent) at Cankarjev dom.
The Estonian delegation would like to thank the Prešeren Theatre team once again for a warm reception in Slovenia – we eagerly look forward to our next meetings!
