Estonian Contemporary Performing Arts Showcase starts on September 4th

28.08.2023 16:05

The Estonian Contemporary Performing Arts Showcase will take place from September 4th to 7th, 2023. For the ninth time, theatre curators and festival directors from all over the world will travel to Estonia to experience the most outstanding productions of the last season of Estonian contemporary performing arts. The showcase, a collaboration between the Estonian Theatre Agency and the DRAAMA Festival, will be attended by about thirty curators from around the world – from Germany, the UK, Spain, Hungary, Croatia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Singapore, India, Colombia, Ukraine, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland.

In 2023, our guests have an opportunity to discover the most exciting new productions that premiered during the season 2022/23. Estonian Theatre Agency is glad to present Juhan Ulfsak’s “Theorem“ based on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s poetic story about radical changes in people and society; SNDO’s alumni Netti Nüganen’’s “The Myth: last day“ that won the price for the best Estonian performing arts production in 2022, Liisa Saaremäel’s concert-performance “SCREAM BOX“ that focuses on tiny vocal cords and big screams; Jarmo Reha’s salon evening, lecture, installation art & ritual called “Divide et Impera“; Lauri Lagle’s uninterrupted musical journey “Only Rivers Run Free”, Sveta Grigorjeva’s soft response to the aggressive world “Dances to Dream, Res(is)t and Sleep to”, and Sigrid Savi’s & Hanna Tangsoo’s hotpot of dance, sculpture, music and fitness trampolines called “COWBODY / Oh wow, it’s you!”. Last but not least, our guests have an exclusive opportunity to see the recording of “Macbeth”, Ene-Liis Semper’s, Tiit Ojasoo’s & Olari Elts’s grand production together with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, that shook the Estonian theatre audience to the core at the beginning of 2023.

Estonian Theatre Agency’s showcase is essentially a festival of contemporary performing arts. The festival program does not represent the mainstream of our theatrical art, and more classical examples of our word-based theater are generally excluded from the showcase format. The festival is mainly aimed at a few dozen invited guests, whose expectations and hopes for the festival are to find new contacts, partners, artists, and productions to invite to their festivals or production houses.
