The Tempest by Peeter Jalakas to premiere in National Kaunas Drama Theatre

18.09.2023 15:17

The Tempest, a tragicomedy by William Shakespeare, is being staged in Lithuania at the National Kaunas Drama Theatre by the Estonian director Peeter Jalakas. The production is set to premiere on September 21st, 2023.

"The Tempest – one of the latest dramatic works by W. Shakespeare, staged many times in various places in Lithuania. Written in the XVII century, this tragicomedy reflects the disappointment of the ideal of humanism and connects reality with the magic and fantasy elements of fairy tales," says the theatre about the production. "Peeter Jalakas, an Estonian director and avant-gardist, creates a modern and theatrical show where live theatre and modern technologies are merged, employing the exotic surroundings of the island. The director offers a unique interpretation – he proposes to look at the inhabitants of the nameless island as the beginning of a new, more perfect, better humanity."

The production team includes the director Peeter Jalakas, the composers Gavin Bryars and Yuri Bryars, the playwright Taavi Eelmaa, the video director and scenographer Emer Värk, the set and costume designer Kristel Zimmer, the choreographer Ema Senkuvienė, the lighting artist Saulius Laucevičius and the cameramen Ridas Beržauskas and Airingas Bašinskas. The troupe consists of the actors from the National Kaunas Drama Theatre: Dainius Svobonas, Martyna Gedvilaitė, Agniezska Ravdo, Artūras Sužiedėlis, Henrikas Savickis, Ričardas Vitkaitis, Arūnas Stanionis, Ridas Žirgulis, Gintautas Bejeris, Mantas Bendžius, Egidijus Stancikas, Andrius Alešiūnas, Deividas Breivė, Motiejus Ivanauskas, Eugenija Bendoriūtė, Miglė Navasaitytė, Aušra Keliuotytė and Kamilė Lebedytė.
