"Missionaries" is based on interviews with men who fought in Afghanistan, and on Dee Brown's book about American Indian wars, "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee". The bridge between those two books was inspired by a journal written by a young boy, who later fought in Afghanistan.

- But you went to Afghanistan as a white man?
I am still a white man, because those damn monkeys live in the 14th century...
