Playwrights
Merle Karusoo
Merle Karusoo is a director, dramaturg,
and educator, often credited as the founder of Estonian documentary and memory theatre. She has taught for decades at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and has staged work in nearly all major Estonian theatres. Central to her practice is the collection and staging of
life stories – particularly those of people at the margins of society. From 1987–1998, she led the Memory Sector of
the Pirgu Development Centre, initiating the long-running
Who Am I?, a project that merges personal biography with
collective reflection. Her work is known for ethical clarity, emotional precision, and a deep sense of social engagement.
