Paul-Eerik Rummo is is a poet, playwright, translator, and critic. He was a central figure in the Estonian literary revival of the 1960s. Rummo graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in Estonian philology in 1965. He has worked at both the Vanemuine and Estonian Drama Theatre and has also been active in cultural policy, serving as Estonia’s Minister of Culture from 1992 to 1994. His poetry and drama explore themes of freedom, society, and existential searching, often marked by ironic optimism, philosophical depth, and poetic precision. His 1967 poetic play Cinderellagame (Tuhkatriinumäng) is considered a classic of Estonian theatre and a breakthrough in stage modernism. Rummo has also written for children, penned lyrics for the film and translated from several languages.
