In 2024, with the participation of the Estonian Theatre Agency, the international project Drama of Smaller European Languages (DoSEL) was launched, focusing on the translating and developing plays written in smaller European languages. From April 16th to 22nd, 2026, the project’s second international showcase will take place in Valletta, Malta, featuring productions based on original dramaturgy written in smaller languages. Estonia will be represented at the festival by Mart Kangro’s production MEDIUM (Von Krahl Theater and OÜ Olevik).
Mart Kangro’s new solo production, MEDIUM, unfolds at the intersection of body and screen, delivering messages and carrying meanings. “What and how we consume within the media field creates the body we actually live in,” says Kangro. “Are we becoming exactly who today’s news designs us to be?”
The production team consists of the author and performer Mart Kangro, dramaturge Nicolette Kretz, text dramaturgs Eero Epner and Mart Kangro, scenographer Kristel Zimmer, sound designer Raido Linkmann, light designer Priidu Adlas, video designers Kristel Zimmer, Herkko Labi, and Mart Kangro, space by Mart Kangro, technical solutions by Herkko Labi, and producers Jaak Prints and Mart Kangro.
MEDIUM premiered on February 27th, 2026, at the Von Krahl Theater, and as part of the DoSEL showcase, the production is set to embark on its first international tour. The guest performance in Malta will take place on April 22nd, 2026, at the Manoel Theater in Valletta.
In addition to MEDIUM, the festival program features productions from Malta, Slovenia, and Croatia based on original dramaturgy. The program also includes an international workshop on dramaturgy and translation, a panel discussion on translation and artificial intelligence, staged play readings, as well as meetings with dramaturgs, directors, and translators.
The goal of DoSEL is to increase the international recognition and accessibility of dramatic works originally written in smaller European languages and to encourage their more frequent staging. The project is a collaboration between eight European cultural organizations, including the National Agency for the Performing Arts from Malta, the Arriaga Antzokia Theatre and Sala Beckett from Spain, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, the Estonian Theatre Agency, the National Theatre of Kosovo, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre from Bulgaria, and the Prešeren Theatre from Slovenia.
