Tartu City of Literature is calling for applications from writers and translators for their two-month residency, from April to May 2025, in Tartu, Estonia. One applicant will be selected. The call lasts until February 20th, 2025.

The programme is open to all writers and translators (translating from Estonian to other languages) from across the world. The residency programme is coordinated by the Estonian Literary Society in cooperation with Tartu Literature House Foundation and in partnership with various other literary institutions.

The organisers are particularly looking for applications that respond to the theme Place as Book / Book as Place. During the Tartu International Literary Festival Prima Vista, taking place from May 5th to 11th, 2025, a public event connected to past residency programmes and the residency apartment will take place.

Applicants need an upper intermediate level of spoken English and at least one published book (fiction or non-fiction), screenplay, theatre script or translation from Estonian into another language. Only writers and translators, who are currently not residents of Estonia, can apply.

Tartu City of Literature offers:

  • 2-month stay at the Karl Ristikivi residency apartment
  • A scholarship of 600 euros per month
  • Compensation of travel costs to and from Tartu up to 350 euros
  • An opportunity to get engaged in the cultural scene of Tartu and to perform at different events, including Tartu International Literary Festival Prima Vista
  • A contact person who is responsible for making arrangements for performances, meetings and tours and helps to engage in the local literary life
