Charlie Gordon is a mentally disabled janitor. People around him always laugh at his simple-mindedness. Charlie also laughs, because he doesn't understand that people do not laugh with him, but at him. But Charlie's teacher sees in Charlie something that the others in this school for the disabled don't have - hope. Hope that one day he would be smart. The teacher is addressed by neurosurgeons, who have discovered a way to triple a human being's intellect by way of surgery. They need a student to become a guinea pig for them. Charlie is chosen for the operation which so far has only been tested on different animals, like a white mouse named Algernon, who is now Charlie's colleague...
