The character Sally Bowles appeared to the stage in 1951 when John van Druten wrote the play "I´m A Camera". In 1955 Julie Harris played the Sally's role in Brodway production and in the film. In 1966 Hal Prince in Broadhurst Theatre directed the play. In his version the scene of action was cabaret club. The musical was born. In 1972 Bob Fosse's film, where Liza Minelli was the Sally, became a hit. The film won 8 Oscars.

In Estonia the musical "Cabaret" was first staged in 1984 in "Estonia" theatre. Stage director was Ago-Endrik Kerge.
