Boulgakoff is a fantasy inspired by some episodes in the life of the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. The plot of the play unravels in 1930 in Moscow, during hot summer days. This story involves a writer and his creative urge, a dream of a free world and the reality of the Soviet life, the whims and phone calls of Stalin, publishing bans, people suddenly disappearing overnight, a nocturnal boat trip on the River Moskva, the 'cleansings' of inner circles, white wine and caviar clenched in a fist, racing into the sunset ...
In addition to the Russian writer, Boulgakoff the play involves characters such as his wife Sidonija Sergejevna, a dreary party-minded writer Faddejev, a merry philosopher Pasha Popov, writers Tolstoi and Fock, and a nameless Blonde. Stalin is also one of the characters - a convincing voice in the telephone although his message remains unclear.
BOULGAKOFF: My works are not published, nor staged, they will not be read or heard. But I write, Faddei. This is my personal privilege given to me by the emperor. I have a permission to write an honest text. In return, I will not publish anything.
Boulgakoff received the 2nd prize at the New Drama Competition of the Estonian Drama Agency in 2005. The play is dedicated to the memory of Estonian writer Mati Unt.
